A 45-year-old male presented with a 3-year history of nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, reduced sense of smell, and intermittent headaches. He had previously been treated with multiple courses of antibiotics and nasal sprays without significant improvement.
Diagnostic Findings:
Nasal endoscopy revealed a large polyp completely blocking the left nasal cavity.
CT scan of paranasal sinuses showed complete opacification of the left maxillary sinus and ethmoid air cells.
Treatment Approach:
The patient underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) under general anesthesia. The polyp was carefully removed using powered instrumentation, and the sinus openings were widened to restore proper drainage and ventilation.
Outcome:
Post-operative recovery was uneventful.
At the 4-week follow-up, the patient reported complete relief from nasal blockage and improved sense of smell.
Regular saline irrigation and follow-up endoscopies were advised to prevent recurrence.
Discussion:
FESS remains the gold standard for the surgical management of chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps. It is minimally invasive, preserves normal anatomy, and significantly improves quality of life in patients with persistent nasal obstruction and recurrent infections.
Conclusion:
Early diagnosis, appropriate imaging, and timely surgical intervention can provide excellent outcomes in cases of chronic sinusitis complicated by large nasal polyps.
If you or a loved one suffers from persistent nasal blockage or sinus issues, consult an ENT specialist for a thorough evaluation and personalized treatment plan.
